Jealousy is such a lie.
Its origin is not of light, but of darkness.
But it’s a sneaky lie. It easily goes undetected in us.
We manifest the fruit of it, without realizing why.
One of the ways jealousy manifests is in the little white lie “I can’t compete.”
We see others with similar skill sets or spiritual gifting, who may be at a different time and place than us in their calling or God-given vocation, and by comparing their journey to ours, we get discouraged. We feel we could never be as fruitful as them because they’re already killing it, we feel like there’s no need for us since they already exist, or we feel threatened or in competition… and like we’ve failed before we’ve begun.
This deception of the enemy steals so much—too much—from us.
We need to learn to detect this lie from its onset, and fight it from the Light with a vengeance.
YOUR UNIQUE DESIGN
Friend, in all the world, there’s no one exactly like you. You and I could share hair color, eye color, nationality, interests, skills, height, weight, likes, dislikes, sense of humor, and even the same name , yet you and I are completely unique.
We have different life experiences, different sufferings, different fears, and different ways we see life. Not to mention your unique DNA, woven from the mind of God. Speaking of God’s mind…its infinite. It’s wildly creative. There’s no limit to the unique creations he can imagine into existence.
GOD’S UNLIMITED RESOURCES
Let’s camp on this concept for a moment.
If God’s mind is infinite in creativity and thought, why do we think there are limited ways a particular gift or talent can manifest?
God clearly knows that there is a need for more than one teacher in the world, for instance. Therefore he’s given many people a gift of teaching. Not only are numerous teachers needed to teach the millions and billions around the world, but numerous types of teachers, and numerous personalities of teachers, and numerous teachers of different concentration or emphasis are needed too. Not one teacher on the globe is the same as another.
Friends, when we feel threatened by someone with similar gifts to us, we’re forgetting who God is! We’re forgetting his endless creativity, his infinite mind, his good intention toward us, and the infinite needs of the world.
THE UNITIY OF THE BODY
There are approximately 37.2 trillion* cells in a human body. Though similar cells make up a single part of the body, each has a unique function and placement on or in that body part. Many cells make up the human tongue, for instance, but no two cells are identical in purpose.
Similarly there may be thousands of us with a similar gifting/talent set (i.e.. teaching, serving, giving, evangelizing, singing, creating art, etc…), but no two of us will outwork that gift identically. Every part of the body of Christ is unique, but created to work in unity of purpose and with unity of mind.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good…For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ… (1 Cor. 12:4-7, 12)
We’ve likely all been taught these truths in one form or another. We get that we’re all different. Yet, the lie of jealousy and competition can make us forget what this truth intrinsically implies for each one of us.
The truth is, we’re not in competition with each other. Not a single one of us. We’re created in unity with each other. And we’re created to work toward a unified purpose. Your gift is highly valuable and needed on this earth, and so is mine.
Friends, when this lie creeps in, when you’re discouraged by your life compared to another’s, look to Jesus for encouragement and truth. Dare to believe that no matter how similar your gift and call is to another’s, its unique to who you are and how it manifests is dependent on the infinite mind of God.
Chin up, dear friend.
All the way up.
And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD. (Ps. 27:6)
