LITTLE WHITE LIES: I Could Never Confess My Sins

The other day our nine year old son watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for the first time. When the movie came to the scene in which Aslan walks through the enemy army to his death, you should have heard him! He was freaking out over all the gross CG creatures created to depict those in the White Witch’s army. For him, this was different than seeing weird creatures in a cartoon. This animation looked real. So real, he was scared. I know that if his friend wasn’t sitting next to him, he’d have been on my lap! (Don’t tell him I told you that!)

What if you and I could do as Lucy, Edmond, Susan, and Peter? What if we could walk through a wardrobe into the unseen realm around us? What if we could see demons? What if we could see how many there are, how they look, how they work? What if we could feel, really feel, their strong and dark oppression? What if we could see how much and how often they function in our lives?

How would this change us?

How would this change the world?

The other day I was telling my husband that it’s like humanity is in a coma. I told him I’ve been pondering what it is I can do or say or create that will send a viral shockwave through humanity to wake her up. I told him it’s like I want to take a massive defibrillator and bring everyone’s heart back to life.

The thing is, the regime of darkness on this earth is very real to me. I can almost see it with my eyes. I see it everywhere I go. I hear it behind everything said (or not said). Partly because I’ve seen a terrible view of it in my own heart/life, and partly because of the intense research journey I’ve been on.

And it is very apparent to me that very few really see it. Especially in themselves.

Oh, we may see the effects of it, the symptoms of it. But do we really see it itself?

If humanity at large could see into the unseen realm, really see “the rulers… the powers… the world forces of this darkness…the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12), she’d be jolted awake so fast! She’d be like my son. She’d freak out at the sight.

But as we are now, we neither perceive nor care about the darkness (the dark demonic army) that assaults and enslaves us ferociously.

The truth is, we will never fight against what we don’t know is there. If we don’t know we have cancer, we won’t fight it. And if we do not perceive the literal dark army all around and in us, we’ll never ever seek to overthrow it!

See, “invisibility” is kind of like the enemy’s superpower. Only, unlike Violet in The Incredibles movie, the enemy uses it for our destruction, not our salvation. If he can stay out of sight out of mind, he can go on deceiving and enslaving us.

Therefore, we must ask God every single day to open our eyes to it. To make us hyper-aware of its vast dealings in our every day. Because when we see it, we seek the solution for it. We seek to overthrow it. We seek freedom from it!

But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light… (Eph 5:13)

Enter: open confession of sins.

What if we saw confession of sins as declaring war on the dark unseen army?

I’m not just talking about admitting we sin sometimes. Or that we’re imperfect people.

I mean confessing everything we do, say, or think that originated from the darkness.

The point of confession is not to shame us or even simply to make apology. The point of confession is outing the dark regime attacking us. Exposing the dark messengers of Satan as the very culprits of our slavery that they are. Learning to be highly aware of them even though we can’t see them. And all this, so that we can live in victory over them and their lies.

The enemies of darkness are hurting, ruining, manipulating, deceiving, hardening, and attacking you constantly. More than you can imagine! And they are me too! Let’s not put up with it!! Let’s fight the devil-inflicted urge to settle under it, to deny its destruction, to make light of its totality.

Let’s not allow ourselves to remain asleep!!

Rather let’s wake up! One real glimpse at the unseen, and we’ll be jolted to life! When we see the true horror of it, we are never the same! It is no longer ok to us. We’ll be fueled and impassioned to fight the darkness with a vengeance. To see people (including ourselves) freed from its death grip.

Yes, let this become our foremost thought and pursuit. Day in and day out. No matter the sphere of life we’re in.

But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light… For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”  Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. (Eph. 5:13-15)
